INTRODUCTION

We take great pleasure in presenting to the attention of students and

investigators of the Secret Doctrines this little work based upon the

world-old Hermetic Teachings. There has been so little written upon this

subject, not withstanding the countless references to the Teachings in

the many works upon occultism, that the many earnest searchers after the

Arcane Truths will doubtless welcome the appearance of this present

volume.

The purpose of this work is not the enunciation of any special

philosophy or doctrine, but rather is to give to the students a

statement of the Truth that will serve to reconcile the many bits of

occult knowledge that they may have acquired, but which are apparently

opposed to each other and which often serve to discourage and disgust

the beginner in the study. Our intent is not to erect a new Temple of

Knowledge, but rather to place in the hands of the student a Master-Key

with which he may open the many inner doors in the Temple of Mystery

through the main portals he has already entered.

There is no portion of the occult teachings possessed by the world which

have been so closely guarded as the fragments of the Hermetic Teachings

which have come down to us over the tens of centuries which have elapsed

since the lifetime of its great founder, Hermes Trismegistus, the

"scribe of the gods," who dwelt in old Egypt in the days when the

present race of men was in its infancy. Contemporary with Abraham, and,

if the legends be true, an instructor of that venerable sage, Hermes

was, and is, the Great Central Sun of Occultism, whose rays have served

to illumine the countless teachings which have been promulgated since

his time. All the fundamental and basic teachings embedded in the

esoteric teachings of every race may be traced back to Hermes. Even the

most ancient teachings of India undoubtedly have their roots in the

original Hermetic Teachings.

From the land of the Ganges many advanced occultists wandered to the

land of Egypt, and sat at the feet of the Master. From him they obtained

the Master-Key which explained and reconciled their divergent views, and

thus the Secret Doctrine was firmly established. From other lands also

came the learned ones, all of whom regarded Hermes as the Master of

Masters, and his influence was so great that in spite of the many

wanderings from the path on the part of the centuries of teachers in

these different lands, there may still be found a certain basic

resemblance and correspondence which underlies the many and often quite

divergent theories entertained and taught by the occultists of these

different lands today. The student of Comparative Religions will be able

to perceive the influence of the Hermetic Teachings in every religion

worthy of the name, now known to man, whether it be a dead religion or

one in full vigor in our own times. There is always certain

correspondence in spite of the contradictory features, and the Hermetic

Teachings act as the Great Reconciler.

The lifework of Hermes seems to have been in the direction of planting

the great Seed-Truth which has grown and blossomed in so many strange

forms, rather than to establish a school of philosophy which would

dominate, the world's thought. But, nevertheless, the original truths

taught by him have been kept intact in their original purity by a few

men each age, who, refusing great numbers of half-developed students and

followers, followed the Hermetic custom and reserved their truth for the

few who were ready to comprehend and master it. From lip to ear the

truth has been handed down among the few. There have always been a few

Initiates in each generation, in the various lands of the earth, who

kept alive the sacred flame of the Hermetic Teachings, and such have

always been willing to use their lamps to re-light the lesser lamps of

the outside world, when the light of truth grew dim, and clouded by

reason of neglect, and when the wicks became clogged with foreign

matter. There were always a few to tend faithfully the altar of the

Truth, upon which was kept alight the Perpetual Lamp of Wisdom. These

men devoted their lives to the labor of love which the poet has so well

stated in his lines:

"O, let not the flame die out! Cherished age after age

in its dark cavern--in its holy temples cherished. Fed

by pure ministers of love--let not the flame die out!"

These men have never sought popular approval, nor numbers of followers.

They are indifferent to these things, for they know how few there are in

each generation who are ready for the truth, or who would recognize it

if it were presented to them. They reserve the "strong meat for men,"

while others furnish the "milk for babes." They reserve their pearls of

wisdom for the few elect, who recognize their value and who wear them in

their crowns, instead of casting them before the materialistic vulgar

swine, who would trample them in the mud and mix them with their

disgusting mental food. But still these men have never forgotten or

overlooked the original teachings of Hermes, regarding the passing on of

the words of truth to those ready to receive it, which teaching is

stated in The Kybalion as follows: "Where fall the footsteps of the

Master, the ears of those ready for his Teaching open wide." And again:

"When the ears of the student are ready to hear, then cometh the lips to

fill them with wisdom." But their customary attitude has always been

strictly in accordance with the other Hermetic aphorism, also in The

Kybalion: "The lips of Wisdom are closed, except to the ears of

Understanding."

There are those who have criticized this attitude of the Hermetists, and

who have claimed that they did not manifest the proper spirit in their

policy of seclusion and reticence. But a moment's glance back over the

pages of history will show the wisdom of the Masters, who knew the folly

of attempting to teach to the world that which it was neither ready or

willing to receive. The Hermetists have never sought to be martyrs, and

have, instead, sat silently aside with a pitying smile on their closed

lips, while the "heathen raged noisily about them" in their customary

amusement of putting to death and torture the honest but misguided

enthusiasts who imagined that they could force upon a race of barbarians

the truth capable of being understood only by the elect who had advanced

along The Path.

And the spirit of persecution has not as yet died out in the land. There

are certain Hermetic Teachings, which, if publicly promulgated, would

bring down upon the teachers a great cry of scorn and revilement from

the multitude, who would again raise the cry of "Crucify! Crucify."

In this little work we have endeavored to give you an idea of the

fundamental teachings of The Kybalion, striving to give you the working

Principles, leaving you to apply therm yourselves, rather than

attempting to work out the teaching in detail. If you are a true

student, you will be able to work out and apply these Principles--if

not, then you must develop yourself into one, for otherwise the Hermetic

Teachings will be as "words, words, words" to you.

Hi everyone,
Enjoy this poem, it really sounds cool.

Today I Got a Valentine
from everyone but Kay.
But that's alright...
I never liked her that much anyway.

She never trades her Oreos.
She isn't good at catch.
She doesn't like my favorite bands.
Her socks don't often match.

She doesn't play computer games.
She wears her hair in braids.
She's something of a teacher's pet
and always gets good grades.

She dots her i's with little hearts.
She's always reading books.
Whenever I'm around, she gives me
such confusing looks.

But, oh my goodness, here comes Kay,
and what is this I see?
It seems she has an extra special
Valentine for me.

It's big and red has the words
"Will you be mine today?"
I always said there's no one else
I like as much as Kay.

have this new netbook and want to play some PC games on it. I haven't really been into the PC genre for a long time so I need to know what's good for me. The netbook is a dual-core N330 (1.6 ghz) with a Nvidia ION (basically a 9400). As a reference I've been playing halo 1+2, far cry, left 4 dead 2, and even managed to squeeze 20fps out of crysis on low-med settings. I need somewhat older games that'll run pretty well. I've been looking into Counter-strike and counter-strike source. Suggestions?

Aim for 10 deep breaths in the morning,10 at night, and as many as you need in between to help relieve stress. Here’s how to do them:

Lie on your back, flat on the floor, with one hand on your belly and one hand on your chest. Lying on the floor at first when you practice is important, because if you stand up, you’re more likely to fake a deep breath by doing an exaggerated chest extension, rather than letting your lungs fill up naturally.

Take a deep breath in -- slowly.

Imagine your lungs filling up with air; it should take about 5 seconds to inhale. As your diaphragm pulls down your chest cavity, your belly button should move away from your spine as your lungs fill with air. Your chest may also widen and rise ever so slightly as you inhale.

When your lungs feel full, exhale slowly -- taking about 7 seconds to let all the air out.

Energy healing is an alternative healing method, or rather, a collection of alternative methods of helping people heal by sending them universal energy. These methods are done by laying on of hands or by channeling the energy over any distance. While this may sound weird to more traditional people in the West, these methods are based on principles that have been in use in the East and in other forms in the West, for thousands of years. The essence of Reiki as experienced by humans is love and grace. Reiki allows us to offer ourselves and others this essence in a non-intrusive and profound way.

Reiki is spiritually guided Universal Life Force Energy. The word Reiki is Japanese in origin and literally means: Rei = Universal (in the sense of spiritually guided or from the Divine); ki = Life force energy (the same as chi or prana). To "use" Reiki is to channel this energy through one's body to one's self or another for healing purposes. Seichim is "living light energy", also spiritually guided universal life force energy. Reiki and Seichim are different "flavors" or vibrational levels of the Divine energy that makes up the life force of everything in the Universe. Neither one is a religion, nor do they require that one be of any particular religious belief.

The world is full of different games, and gaming in itself is a different world altogether. It has its own fun, excitement and enthusiasm, which is incomparable to other forms of entertainment. And this holds true, especially in the case of Nintendo DS games, which have created a roar worldwide. They have a larger fan following than even Brad Pitt could manage!

Since the time the Nintendo gaming console has hit the market, the gaming experience has completely transformed. Not only do we see a greater variety in games, but we also have better graphics and facilities of multi-player games. Nintendo
games give an ultimately enchanting experience to a gamer, such that you are sure to be hooked on to it!

One of the key features of DS games is interactivity. The games engage and involve the player in an excellent way, and this is what sets them apart from all other sorts of games available in the market. They have interesting stimulating and role playing aspects which are enjoyed by both kids and adults alike.

All DS games can be previewed from Nintendo’s Wii channel, on the main menu. The channel gives out previews of all games, and also updates on the new DS games being launched. This way, the gamer is guaranteed full knowledge of the recent developments.

Some of the most famous Nintendo DS games include Guitar Hero and Mario Kart. Other games such as the Legend of Zelda- Phantom Hour Glass and Battles of Prince of Persia are also quite famous.

When buying DS games, certain things need to be kept in mind. One should always check on points such as reviews, rankings, number of players etc. Reviews by existing customers of the games, and rankings of DS games on the internet and other media such as newspapers and magazines help in the selection of good games.
lovejenete
Also check on whether the DS games you are planning to buy are suited for Wi-Fi connectivity. Moreover, there can be differences in the prices of DS games with different dealers. Hence, always do a comprehensive check with all dealers to compare prices before buying DS games.

Nintendo DS games are also known for their 3D graphics, and brilliant virtual environment. Again, user reviews and other information sources available help to know which DS games offer a better experience than the others.

The following are some of the most successful Xbox 360 games over the past 3 years.

7. Gears of War 2
The game is all kinds of fun. The graphics are spectacularly detailed, a highlight amongst Xbox 360 games, the combat is rich and satisfying, and the multiplayer is a source for ongoing entertainment thanks to a great mix of competitive and cooperative play modes.

6. Crackdown
Who would have ever thought that 500 green glowing orbs would become the focal point of our lives for a short period in 2007? Two years after its release, it's hard not to look back on Crackdown fondly. From the swan dive atop the Agency headquarters to the complete destruction of all of Pacific City's organized crime, Crackdown is a memorable foray into super-heroism. Its game play is unique amongst Xbox 360 games.

5. Grand Theft Auto IV
Few Xbox 360 games have effectively shut down the office during business hours, and GTA4 is one of them. Rockstar North's sequel is a beautiful depiction of the Big Apple, and the difference between GTA4 and its predecessors is vast.

4. Mass Effect
There are very few developers of Xbox 360 games that can compare to BioWare in the RPG space, and Mass Effect is a good example of why. It's a sweeping tale filled with excitement, action and fascinating alien races to learn about and interact with.

3. BioShock
In terms of story and art direction, BioShock hits a high-water mark for Xbox 360 games, that has yet to be equaled. While ostensibly a first-person shooter (the game offers incredible freedom when it comes to offering players creative ways to cause mayhem), it was really the extraordinary art direction and well-written dialogue that were the stars of the show.

2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
This game saw the return of developer Infinity Ward, which brought with it a new level of realism and storytelling for first-person shooters. A departure from past Xbox 360 games in the series, which dealt with World War II, Call of Duty 4 takes a more contemporary approach using modern weaponry and current global crises. It also introduced perks, gameplay-enhancing bonuses that could be earned through online play

1. Fallout 3
This effort by Bethesda has silenced all but the game's most die-hard critics. Everything about Fallout 3, from the amazingly designed world to the haunting score to the slow-motion head explosions of the VATS system is top-notch. Fallout 3 is less a game to be played or a problem to be solved than an entire universe to be explored. This is THE must-have amongst all Xbox 360 games.

Image: http://news.softpedia.com/images/news2/Y...dows-2.jpg

Quote:The Rain Forest Wind Chinese company presented a few days ago their brand-new operating system, a hacked Ubuntu distribution that looks just like the ever-popular Windows XP operating system from Microsoft. Not only has the GTK theme been tuned to be like the Windows XP desktop, but the icons are also identical and the Wine software is present to allow the users to employ Windows applications. Above all that, there are also a lot of "under the hood" enhancements and many of those useful programs and tools that are not available in Ubuntu. Have a look below at some of the most important features added in Ylmf OS, compared with an original Ubuntu Linux distribution.

Highlights of the Ylmf Operating System:

· Fully skinned with a Windows XP look-a-like theme;
· Wine integration to emulate Windows applications;
· Ability to extract RAR archives with a single click;
· 3D desktop effects via Compiz Fusion (also includes a configuration utility);
· Integrated CHM viewer with the Chmsee gadget;
· Added the "Open in Terminal" add-on for Nautilus;
· Added aMule P2P file sharing software;
· Added Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger;
· Added FileZilla FTP client;
· Added Claws e-mail client;
· Integrated the multi-threaded Downloader For X (D4X) file download tool;
· Integrated Dr.com graphical client for easy Internet;
· Lots of enhancements to the Mozilla Firefox web browser (FlashGot, D4X support, FlashAX, Alipay, etc);
· Added SMPlayer video player;
· Added Gecko Mediaplayer web video player;
· Helps files for OpenOffice.org;
· PDF reader;
· Chinese time zone;
· Tweaked the system menu and rearranged the shortcuts for easy usage of included apps;
· Various tweaks for mounting Windows partitions.
· Many other minor, but useful, enhancements!

All in all, you can download the Ylmf OS right now from Softpedia, and Happy New Year!

I don't know why you'd want to do this....

The general thinking is that people will like it because it's familiar but..... This has been tried several times before.... remember Lindows?

To be fair, Linux is allot more user friendly than it was then, and they are using Ubuntu as a base... but.... will it be successful?

If your going to run Linux you might as well get used to Linux, but that's just me.

This could help the Linux community to grow, weaning people off windows but then if they aren't wanting to try Linux without the Windows feel... they may not go much further. (ok so it doesn't look the exact same.)

Maybe I'll even try it just out of curiosity, I hope there is an english language pack though.... or maybe I don't.
I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has Chinese time zones as an option though, and a Chinese language pack so unless they've been redone or edited, that's not new.

· Fully skinned with a Windows XP look-a-like theme;
· Wine integration to emulate Windows applications;
· Ability to extract RAR archives with a single click;
· 3D desktop effects via Compiz Fusion (also includes a configuration utility);
· Integrated CHM viewer with the Chmsee gadget;
· Added the "Open in Terminal" add-on for Nautilus;
· Added aMule P2P file sharing software;
· Added Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger;
· Added FileZilla FTP client;
· Added Claws e-mail client;
· Integrated the multi-threaded Downloader For X (D4X) file download tool;
· Integrated Dr.com graphical client for easy Internet;
· Lots of enhancements to the Mozilla Firefox web browser (FlashGot, D4X support, FlashAX, Alipay, etc);
· Added SMPlayer video player;
· Added Gecko Mediaplayer web video player;
· Helps files for OpenOffice.org;
· PDF reader;
· Chinese time zone;
· Tweaked the system menu and rearranged the shortcuts for easy usage of included apps;

But hey, if it works for them, great.

Quote:Everyone was waiting for this, so... we are proud to announce that the upcoming release of the popular Ubuntu operating system, due for launch in late April this year, will come with a comprehensive manual! The manual is created as we speak and it will be ready to accompany the final release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. The Ubuntu manual will be designed for beginners in Linux and Ubuntu (of course) and it will contain essential how-tos, guides, basic information about Linux and its components, and everything one needs to know after installing Ubuntu.

"As a beginner user once upon a time, I found myself struggling to find useful and easy to understand documentation in an accessible location. The Official Ubuntu Book is great, but it is expensive. The Pocket Guide by Keir Thomas is informative, but doesn't delve into enough detail in some areas, and is now out of date (written for 8.04/8.10). The Community Docs are excellent, but are not structured and do not follow a consistent writing style. The Ubuntu Help pages inside the Operating System are the best option for newcomers, but are often underused and lack screenshots." – the Ubuntu Manual Team said.

The Ubuntu manual is distributed as a PDF file and it will be revised every 6 months. The manual will be well written (it appears that only in English, but no one stops you to translate it), with a professional appearance and very easy to follow, even by the users that just heard about Linux or Ubuntu. And it is created and maintained by the Ubuntu community!

At the moment, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) is in an alpha state, with just one release out. The second alpha release is expected next Thursday, January 14th.

We remind everyone that Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) will be a quality and stable release. Canonical plans to make Ubuntu 10.04 LTS a bug-free operating system, with lots of quality improvements to the user interface, installation & boot experience and support for the latest hardware components. Another important goal for the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) release will be to improve the startup speed to about or less than 10 seconds!

The Lucid Lynx will be the 12th release of the Ubuntu operating system, and the third LTS (Long Term Support) release, supported for 5 years on the server and 3 years on the desktop. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) will ship on April 29th, 2010.

About Ubuntu:

Ubuntu is a Linux distribution for your desktop or server, with a fast and easy install, regular releases, a tight selection of excellent packages installed by default, every other package you can imagine available from the network, and professional technical support from Canonical Ltd and hundreds of other companies around the world.

Dogs Smell Cancer in Patients' Breath, Study Shows

Quote:Dogs can detect if someone has cancer just by sniffing the person's breath, a new study shows.

Ordinary household dogs with only a few weeks of basic "puppy training" learned to accurately distinguish between breath samples of lung- and breast-cancer patients and healthy subjects.

"Our study provides compelling evidence that cancers hidden beneath the skin can be detected simply by [dogs] examining the odors of a person's breath," said Michael McCulloch, who led the research.

Early detection of cancers greatly improves a patient's survival chances, and researchers hope that man's best friend, the dog, can become an important tool in early screening.

The new study, slated to appear in the March issue of the journal Integrative Cancer Therapies, was conducted by the Pine Street Foundation, a cancer research organization in San Anselmo, California.

Biochemical Markers

Dogs can identify chemical traces in the range of parts per trillion. Previous studies have confirmed the ability of trained dogs to detect skin-cancer melanomas by sniffing skin lesions.

Also, some researchers hope to prove dogs can detect prostate cancer by smelling patients' urine.

"Canine scent detection of cancer was something that was anecdotally discussed for decades, but we felt it was appropriate to design a rigorous study that seriously investigated this topic to better evaluate its effectiveness," said Nicholas Broffman, executive director of the Pine Street Foundation.

Lung- and breast-cancer patients are known to exhale patterns of biochemical markers in their breath.

"Cancer cells emit different metabolic waste products than normal cells," Broffman said. "The differences between these metabolic products are so great that they can be detected by a dog's keen sense of smell, even in the early stages of disease."

The researchers used a food reward-based method to train five ordinary household dogs.

Encountering breath samples captured in tubes, the dogs gave a positive identification of a cancer patient by sitting or lying down in front of a test station.

By scent alone, the canines identified 55 lung and 31 breast cancer patients from those of 83 healthy humans.

The results of the study showed that the dogs could detect breast cancer and lung cancer between 88 and 97 percent of the time.

The high degree of accuracy persisted even after results were adjusted to take into account whether the lung cancer patients were currently smokers.

"It did not seem to matter which dog it was or which stage cancer it was, in terms of our results," Broffman said.

Different Wiring

According to James Walker, director of the Sensory Research Institute at Florida State University in Tallahassee, canines' sense of smell is generally 10,000 to 100,000 times superior to that of humans.

It is unclear what exactly makes dogs such good smellers, though much more of the dog brain is devoted to smell than it is in humans. Canines also have a greater convergence of neurons from the nose to the brain than humans do.

"The dog's brain and nose hardware is currently the most sophisticated odor detection device on the planet," McCulloch, the study leader, said. "Technology now has to rise to meet that challenge."

Researchers envision that dogs could be used in doctors' offices for preliminary cancer detection.

"There are lots of experimental treatments," Walker said. "This could be an experimental diagnostic tool for a while, and one that is impossible to hurt anyone with or to mess up their diagnosis with."

Broffman, the Pine Street director, hopes to build on the current study to explore the development of an "electronic nose."

"Such technology would attempt to achieve the precision of the dog's nose," he said. "Such technology would also be more likely to appear in your doctor's office."

Quote:ANGRA DOS REIS, Brazil - At least 30 people were killed and 10 injured early Friday in two mudslides in a coastal region near Rio de Janeiro.

A rain-loosened slab of hillside collapsed on three houses and an upscale waterfront lodge after New Year celebrations at an island resort in Angra dos Reis, killing at least 19 people, Brazilian authorities said.

About 120 rescuers scrambled through mud and around toppled trees and large rocks to search for other survivors of the mudslide that also injured at least 10 people. Police helicopters and navy vessels were helping in the rescue efforts.

"People had never seen so much rain in this region," Rio de Janeiro's vice governor, Luiz Fernando Pezao, told Globo TV, and he indicated he feared the death toll could rise. "We'll have to wait for the rescue efforts, but we'll likely encounter a very sad outcome."

A civil defense spokeswoman added that "rescue crews told us there is just so much mud" that removing all the debris would take time.

In another section of the same city, 11 people died in a second mudslide.

The rain-related deaths in Rio de Janeiro state from the past three days of heavy rains reached 50, authorities said, and more rain was predicted across the region.

The lodge mudslide apparently happened after tourists had returned to their rooms following the New Year's celebration in the Pousada Sankay on Ilha Grande, a 90-minute ferry ride from the city of Angra dos Reis, said fire department commander Pedro Machado.

Globo TV reported that a boy and a teenage girl were among the victims, but authorities could not immediately confirm the information.

Tourists rented homes
Police said some of the dead may have been in the houses. They did not immediately release the identities or nationalities of the victims.

"We were told that many of these houses here were rented by tourists for the holidays," Pezao said.

Witnesses told local media the hillside lodge and the houses, which can only be accessed by boat, collapsed after being struck by a slab of land 300 yards wide.

A broad, raw scar of dirt remained on the jungle hillside above the lodge that was smashed by mud, trees and other vegetation. Only a handful of houses and small patches of vegetation were left unscathed.

Wooden parts of the lodge were seen floating near the shore and on the beach.

Lodge reportedly full at time

Lodge reportedly full at time
The hotel, which advertises nightly rates of about $200 and which can accommodate 50 guests, was reportedly full at the time of the mudslide. The lodge was inaugurated in 1994, according to its Web site.

Quote:SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea called for an end of hostile relations with the United States in a New Year's message and said it was committed to making the Korean peninsula nuclear-free through negotiations.

At the same time, a Tokyo-based pro-North Korean newspaper indicated that the leaders of North and South Korea could hold a summit this year, citing Pyongyang's strong commitment to improve relations with Seoul.

Communist North Korea has long demanded that Washington end hostility toward its government, and said it developed nuclear weapons to deter a U.S. attack. Washington has repeatedly said it has no intention of invading the country.

The New Year statement brightened prospects for North Korea to rejoin stalled international talks on ending its nuclear weapons programs in exchange for aid and other concessions. Washington has sought to coax it to return to the talks, which also include South Korea, China, Russia and Japan.

'Peace and stability'
The North has often said it wants to replace a cease-fire that ended the 1950-53 Korean War with a peace treaty and forge diplomatic relations with the U.S. as a way to win security guarantees — demands Washington says should be linked to North Korea's verifiable denuclearization.

"The fundamental task for ensuring peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and in the rest of Asia is to put an end to the hostile relationship" between North Korea and the U.S., the North said Friday in the New Year statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency, state radio and television.

North Korea's traditional New Year's Day statements are examined for clues to its policies. This year's statement said it is committed to establishing "a lasting peace system on the Korean peninsula and make it nuclear-free through dialogue and negotiations."

The U.S. and North Korea agreed on the need to resume the nuclear negotiations during a trip by President Barack Obama's special envoy to Pyongyang in December, but North Korea did not make a firm commitment on when it would rejoin the talks.

Last year, North Korea quit the disarmament talks and conducted a nuclear test, drawing widespread condemnation and tighter U.N. sanctions.

Cheong Seong-chang, a senior analyst at the private Sejong Institute security think tank, said North Korea is likely to maintain its conciliatory approach toward the U.S.

"The North extended an olive branch to the U.S.," Cheong said, adding that he expects the two sides will agree to set up a liaison office as a symbolic move to end their hostilities.

But Andrei Lankov, a North Korea expert at Kookmin University in Seoul, said despite North Korea's willingness to talk with the U.S., it is unlikely to surrender its nuclear program or make any other important concessions.

The North Korean statement said it remains committed to improving relations with South Korea, and urged the South to refrain from actions that might aggravate tensions.

"Unshakable is our stand that we will improve the north-south relations," said the statement.

The Tokyo-based Choson Sinbo newspaper, considered a mouthpiece for North Korea's government, suggested in a report late Friday the possibility of an inter-Korean summit this year.

Secret meeting
The two Koreas held their first summit in 2000 between then-President Kim Dae-jung and North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. The second summit was held in 2007 between then-President Roh Moo-hyun and Kim.

The two sides held a secret meeting in October in Singapore and two follow-up meetings in November at a North Korean border town to discuss setting up a summit between South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Kim, Yonhap news agency said last month, citing unidentified sources.

North Korea has tried to reach out to Seoul and Washington since last summer in an about-face that analysts and officials say shows the North feels the pain of U.N. sanctions.

In South Korea on Friday, about 70 conservative activists tied tens of thousands of leaflets condemning Kim Jong Il to balloons and launched them across the border into the North. Some protesters also burned large North Korean flags with Kim's picture printed on them.

Quote:PERTH, Australia - Wildfires possibly sparked by fallen power lines roared across a swath of western Australia on Wednesday, razing almost 40 homes and sending hundreds of people fleeing for their lives, officials and witnesses said. At least three people were injured.

Two major blazes burned out of control overnight after breaking out Tuesday afternoon in a wheat and sheep farming district north of the coastal city of Perth, forcing the evacuation of the township of Toodyay and threatening a second town, Badgingarra, farther north.

The two fires scorched a combined total of more than 33,000 acres of forest and farmland before cooler conditions on Wednesday helped hundreds of firefighters contain them.

Western Australia state Premier Colin Barnett declared a natural disaster — freeing up emergency funds for survivors — and praised authorities who battled the blazes.

"There is no doubt they saved lives last night," Barnett said Wednesday after visiting burned-out homes in Toodyay. "If you saw the destruction, houses were totally destroyed and people were got to safety by the emergency services."

The state Fire and Emergency Services Authority said at least 37 houses had been razed.

Two firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and a third was treated for a heat-related illness. Farmers also reported stock being killed. The extent of the damage was still being assessed, said emergency authority spokesman Allen Gale.

Police say falling power lines likely sparked the Toodyay blaze, since there were no other ignition sources in the area.

The managing director of Western Power, Doug Aberle, told Australian Broadcasting Corp. that an independent investigator would head to the scene on Saturday.

"If it's determined that it's caused by our negligence, we will be paying compensation as appropriately determined, as we always do," he said, expressing his sympathy to the victims.

Wildfires are common across Australian during the summer months, but they rarely claim so many homes.

Fire officials say the Australian summer could be one of the worst wildfire seasons, with a series of catastrophic warnings already issued for big fires in at least three states.

In February, Australia experienced its worst wildfire disaster on record when hundreds of blazes raced across huge parts of southeastern Victoria state, killing 173 and destroying more than 2,000 homes in a single day.

Australia's wildfire danger period is from October to March, covering the end of spring, all of summer and the start of autumn, when temperatures are highest and humidity lowest.

A decade-long drought and hot, dry interior outback winds have left much of Australia a tinderbox.
